As the moon climbed higher in the sky, I began to see that the slopes of the valley were not quite so perpendicular as I had imagined. Ledges and outcroppings of rock afforded fairly easy foot-holds for a descent, whilst after a drop of a few hundred feet, the declivity became very gradual. Urged on by an impulse which I cannot definitely analyse, I scrambled with difficulty down the rocks and stood on the gentler slope beneath, gazing into the Stygian deeps where no light had yet penetrated.
All at once my attention was captured by a vast and singular object on the opposite slope, which rose steeply about an hundred yards ahead of me; an object that gleamed whitely in the newly bestowed rays of the ascending moon. That it was merely a gigantic piece of stone, I soon assured myself; but I was conscious of a distinct impression that its contour and position were not altogether the work of Nature. A closer scrutiny filled me with sensations I cannot express; for despite its enormous magnitude, and its position in an abyss which had yawned at the bottom of the sea since the world was young, I perceived beyond a doubt that the strange object was a well-shaped monolith whose massive bulk had known the workmanship and perhaps the worship of living and thinking creatures.
Dazed and frightened, yet not without a certain thrill of the scientist’s or archaeologist’s delight, I examined my surroundings more closely. The moon, now near the zenith, shone weirdly and vividly above the towering steeps that hemmed in the chasm, and revealed the fact that a far-flung body of water flowed at the bottom, winding out of sight in both directions, and almost lapping my feet as I stood on the slope. Across the chasm, the wavelets washed the base of the Cyclopean monolith; on whose surface I could now trace both inscriptions and crude sculptures. The writing was in a system of hieroglyphics unknown to me, and unlike anything I had ever seen in books; consisting for the most part of conventionalised aquatic symbols such as fishes, eels, octopi, crustaceans, molluscs, whales, and the like. Several characters obviously represented marine things which are unknown to the modern world, but whose decomposing forms I had observed on the ocean-risen plain.

最初の下線部

本連載の対象読者である高校生のように、今まで読んだ英文の蓄積が少ない場合、文頭にある前置詞の連続「Urged on by impulse」に少し戸惑うかもしれない。とりあえず、『ロイヤル英文法』の「§277 句動詞の受動態」にある次の例文を見ていただきたい。
My hamster was looked after by my sister while I was away.
（私のいない間、私のハムスターは妹に世話をしてもらった）
本文下線部と同様、「after by」と前置詞が連続している。これは、
My sister looked after my hamster while I was away.
（私がいない間、妹がハムスターの世話をしてくれた）
という文章から作った受動態の文に相当する。ここから、looked afterのafterが、語順の関係でbyの前に来たことが容易に理解できる。本文冒頭のUrged on by an impulseを、目的語を補いつつ能動態にしてみれば、
An impulse urged me on…
となることは自明であろう。なお、目的語が代名詞（me）なので、urged on meではなくurged me onになっていることに注意。
ところで、今回の前置詞の連続は、いわば形式的なものであるが、意味的に二つの前置詞が連続する「二重前置詞」も存在する。詳細は省くが、『ロイヤル英文法』の「§324 二重前置詞」から一つだけ例文を挙げておく。「from among」の連続に注目。
He was chosen from among the volunteers.
（彼は志願者の中から選ばれた）
二番目の下線部
That it was merely a gigantic piece of stone, I soon assured myself; but I was conscious of a distinct impression that its contour and position were not altogether the work of Nature.
文頭の「That it was...」は明らかに名詞節なので、これが主語だと思って読んでいくと、動詞が出てこないまま「piece of stone」で切れるので、大げさに言えば英文構造の再把握が必要になる。
まずは黙って、『ロイヤル英文法』の「§12 第4文型〈S+V+O1+O2〉」にある例文を読んでみよう。
I convinced him that he was wrong.
（私は彼がまちがっていることを悟らせた）
これは、thatの導く名詞節が直接目的語（O2）になる場合の第4文型の例文であり、文型としては本文冒頭もこれと同じである。異なるのは、O2に相当する「That it was merely a gigantic piece of stone」が前に来て語順が変わっていることである。図示すれば以下の通りである。

なぜ語順が変わっているかというと、これはおそらく、以下に示す直前の文章で、

「a vast and singular object」及び「an object」が登場しており、「That it was merely a gigantic piece of stone」の「it」と結びつきが強い（というか、そのものを指す）ので、情報の流れに配慮して、前置が起こったのであろう。
ところで、細かいことを言うと、「I assured myself」のように、目的語に再帰代名詞（myself）を使用するのは、古いというか堅苦しい表現であり、一般的には「I was assured」のように「be動詞＋過去分詞」の形を使う。
その他、「not altogether」は部分否定なので、「まったく～というわけではない」という意味。また、最後の「Nature」の「N」が大文字になっているが、「Mother Nature」（母なる自然）のように、natureを「自然」の意味で使う場合は、しばしば大文字になる。「human nature」（人間の性質）のような意味で使う場合は大文字にならない。

特に文法的な解説は不要と思うが、挿入句「now near the zenith」の表現とかは少し格好良い気がする。
四番目の下線部
Several characters obviously represented marine things which are unknown to the modern world, but whose decomposing forms I had observed on the ocean-risen plain.
この文章を取り上げたのは、参考訳として示した青空文庫に、誤訳と思われる箇所があるからである。下線部英文に対応する青空文庫の訳文は以下の通りである。
「文字の中には、海底隆起によりできた平地で、腐敗した死骸を目にした他は、現代の世界では知られていない、海の生物を表しているらしいものもあった。」
まず、「marine things which are unknown to the modern world」が、「現代の世界では知られていない、海の生物」なのは（「海の生物」という訳語のセンスはともかく）特に問題ないだろう。
次の「but whose decomposing forms I had observed on the ocean-risen plain」の処理が難ありで、この訳文だと、「海の生物」の内、「腐敗した死骸」は現代の世界で知られているように読めるが、文脈から言って誤りであろう。
文の構造的に言っても、先行詞「marine things」を、「which are…」と「whose decomposing forms…」が並列して説明しているので、「現代の世界では知られていないが、海底隆起によりできた平地で腐敗した死骸を目にした、海の生物」と解釈すべきだろう。
なお、国書刊行会の『定本ラヴクラフト全集１』に収録されている山中清子氏の訳では、該当部分は以下のようになっている。
「現代の世界ではまだ知られていない海棲動物、どうやら、海底隆起でできた平原で目撃した、腐敗した得体の知れぬもの」（49ページ）
しっかり英語を勉強しないと、読解ミスをするので気をつけましょう、という話。今回はここまで。
月が空高く昇るにつれ、谷の傾斜は思ったより切り立っていないことが分かってきた。岩棚や露出した石が下っていくのに最適な足場になっていて、数百フィートの急な下りを過ぎれば、坂は穏やかになっているようだった。不可解な衝動に駆られ、苦労しながら岩をはい降り、その下のゆるやかな坂に立った。そして、未だ光が射したことのない真っ暗な底を覗きこんだ。
ふと注意を引かれたのは、前方およそ100ヤードのところにそそり立つ、向かいの斜面にある大きくて奇妙な物体だった。それは、高度を増す月の光に照らされて、白く輝いていた。巨大な岩石であることは、すぐに分かった。しかし、その形や位置が自然の力だけによるのではないという印象も強く受けた。さらによく見ているうちに、言いようのない感覚を覚えた。途方もなく大きく、海底にぽっかり開いた溝に地球ができて間もない頃から存在していたにも関わらず、その奇妙な物体は形を整えられたモノリスであり、その巨体は過去に、知的生物による細工を受け、そしておそらくは礼拝の対象だったに疑いないように思えた。
恐怖で呆然とする一方、科学者や考古学者の喜びのような多少のスリルも感じながら、周囲をさらに詳細に調べてみた。月は今や天頂近く、谷間を囲む高い断崖の上を妖しく鮮やかに輝き、谷底に幅広い川が流れているのが分かった。川は湾曲しており上流も下流も見えない。そして水は、斜面に立つ足のところまで来ていた。谷の向こうでは、巨大なモノリスの土台も波に洗われている。モノリスの表面に文字や粗雑な彫刻が刻まれているのを見ることができた。碑文は象形文字で書かれていたが、私の知らないものであり、また、本で見たいかなるものとも違っていた。文字の大部分は、魚、鰻、蛸、甲殻類、軟体動物、鯨などの水棲動物を様式化していた。文字の中には、海底隆起によりできた平地で、腐敗した死骸を目にした他は、現代の世界では知られていない、海の生物を表しているらしいものもあった。
