『ヘミングウェイで学ぶ英文法』という英語学習参考書が異例のヒットだという。二匹目のドジョウを狙うどこかの出版社が、『ラヴクラフトで学ぶ英文法』を出してくれたらと祈る日々である。（著者は大瀧先生を希望。）
それはともかく、前回の続きから「ダゴン」を読んでいく。主人公が「忘却や死」を望むようになった恐怖体験の発端が語られる。
原文
It was in one of the most open and least frequented parts of the broad Pacific that the packet of which I was supercargo fell a victim to the German sea-raider. The Great War was then at its very beginning, and the ocean forces of the Hun had not completely sunk to their later degradation; so that our vessel was made legitimate prize, whilst we of her crew were treated with all the fairness and consideration due us as naval prisoners. So liberal, indeed, was the discipline of our captors, that five days after we were taken I managed to escape alone in a small boat with water and provisions for a good length of time.

解説
単語が分かれば特に難しいところはないが、せっかくなので細かいところを見ていく。
一番目の下線部、I was supercargosupercargo（船荷監督人）は可算名詞なのに冠詞がない。これは、directorやcaptainなどと同様、「唯一の、あるいは特殊の目立った職位や地位を表す名詞にはふつう冠詞をつけない（『ロイヤル英文法』）」ことによる。
二番目の下線部、The Great Warとは何だろうか？「Dagon」が1917年の作品であることも考慮すると、第一次世界大戦（1914-1918）で間違いない。ちなみに、『All Over クトゥルー -クトゥルー神話作品大全-』というクトゥルー神話の解説書に収められた「クトゥルー神話関連年表」には、「Dagon」の舞台が1915年と読めるような記載もあるが、根拠は不明。
三番目の下線部、we of her crewのofは、いわゆる「同格のof」で、we, her crewとしてもほぼ同じ意味である。なお、herは当然、our vesselのこと。
四番目の下線部、So liberal, indeed, was the discipline of our captors, thatは、補語（so liberal）を強調のために文頭に出したため、倒置が起きている。元の語順は、The discipline of our captors was so liberal, indeed, thatである。『ロイヤル英文法』には、「So great was his astonishment that he was speechless.（彼は度肝を抜かれたので口がきけなかった。）」との例文が載っている。今回はここまで。
船荷監督として乗船していた定期船がドイツの襲撃艇に捕らえられたのは、広い太平洋のなかでも一段と広々として、船の往来がめったにない海域だった。大戦は始まったばかりで、ドイツ人どもの海軍も、後のように落ちぶれきってはいなかった。船は合法的な戦利品にされたといえ、乗組員は海軍の捕虜として、相応の公正さと配慮をもって扱われた。やつらの軍規が実に大らかだったおかげで、拿捕されてから五日後、小さなボートに長期間もつだけの水と食料を積み、ひとり逃げおおすことができた。
